Hong Kong has reported its first human case of rat hepatitis E virus in 2026.

According to Oxu.Az, citing aif.ru, local authorities have launched an investigation.

The virus was detected on May 5 in a 42-year-old man with chronic liver disease. He has been discharged in stable condition.

No family members have been infected, but they remain under medical observation. Experts are also inspecting the patient's home and workplace.

This is the first such infection in Hong Kong in 2026. Over the past five years, only an average of two rat hepatitis E cases were reported annually.
