US Secretary of State Marco Rubio admitted that Washington is using non-payment of UN dues as leverage to push for reforms in the organization.

According to Oxu.Az citing TASS, Rubio made the statement during a hearing at the US House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“I believe our mission to the UN is successfully achieving significant reforms. We use our dues as leverage. Last year, we had serious successes — real cuts were made to the inflated UN budget,” Rubio said.

He also claimed that the UN's activities no longer meet its founding purposes.

Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that the UN faces financial collapse due to the US and China withholding full payments amid disagreements over the organization's operations.
