The US has not abandoned the idea of gaining sovereignty over Greenland.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated this during a hearing in the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
"President Trump's idea is that when you control something, it's easier to protect it. We are negotiating with Denmark and Greenland. I think we will have good news," Rubio said.
When asked if he was aware that Greenland is part of Denmark, Rubio replied "for now."
