British Prime Minister Keir Starmer may voluntarily resign in favor of Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Starmer is reportedly considering all options. Although he has stated he is ready to fend off any challenges to his leadership, a voluntary resignation is possible if factions within the Labour Party rally around Burnham.
On May 14, Burnham announced his candidacy for Parliament from the Makerfield constituency. The Labour Party's national executive committee approved his nomination on May 15. A by-election is expected on June 18.
If Burnham wins, he could become a candidate for Prime Minister. Over 90 Labour MPs have spoken in favor of Starmer's departure. Health Minister Wes Streeting resigned on May 15, citing loss of confidence in Starmer.
