A terror alert has been raised in the Italian city of Modena after a driver deliberately drove a car into pedestrians.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni cut short her business visit to Cyprus and returned to Italy following the incident.
The perpetrator has been identified as 31-year-old Salim el-Qudri, born in Italy of Moroccan origin. He suffered from mental disorders and was registered for treatment, but had not received recent therapy.
The attack left seven people injured, two of whom had their legs amputated. The assailant was apprehended by passersby and a knife was found on him.
While investigators are not primarily considering a terrorist motive, all connections are being examined. He faces charges of attempted murder, causing multiple injuries, and carrying a cold weapon.
