In July 2024, the US Secret Service failed to prevent an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, then the Republican presidential candidate.
A report by the Inspector General of the US Department of Homeland Security details the failures.
According to the document, the Secret Service missed key opportunities to detect and stop the attack by Thomas Crooks.
Specifically, personnel were unaware of Crooks using a drone to survey the area, due to poor training and technical equipment flaws.
Furthermore, no joint command post was established with local law enforcement, so information about suspicious behavior was not shared.
The assassination attempt occurred on July 13, 2024. Trump sustained a minor injury when a bullet grazed his ear. The attacker, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was neutralized at the scene.
