US President Donald Trump congratulated Abelardo de la Espriella, whom he once politically supported, on his victory in the first round of Colombia's presidential election.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said: "I congratulate Abelardo de la Espriella, a smart, strong, and decisive leader, on his confident win in the first round. I am honored to express my full and unconditional support for him."

The second round of the election will be held on June 21.
