UK Deputy Home Minister Jess Phillips resigned on May 12 due to disagreements with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. She is the second official to leave the cabinet that day.
Earlier, Housing Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh had also stepped down in protest against the government's policies.
The political turmoil stems from local elections on May 7. The Labour Party lost control of the Welsh Parliament and saw a net loss of about 1,400 seats. Starmer accepted responsibility but refused to resign.
Now, 80 Labour MPs are openly demanding his resignation, fearing a negative impact on the party's chances in the 2029 general elections. Several junior ministers also resigned on May 11.
However, after a cabinet meeting on May 12, Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden stated that senior members did not call for Starmer's resignation.
