The British government has announced that asylum seekers will be required to repay approximately £10,000 in living and support costs after they start working.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that support is both a right and a responsibility. She expects refugees to contribute to the economy once they are able.
Adult migrants granted refugee status or indefinite leave must repay the amount in installments before applying for permanent residency. The minimum income threshold for monthly payments has not yet been confirmed.
