2.8 billion people worldwide live without adequate housing, according to a UN official speaking at the World Urban Forum.
Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, UN Assistant Secretary-General, said some construction companies ignore climate conditions and focus only on profit. As a result, people living and working in those buildings suffer negative impacts.
She highlighted financing as a key issue, with unsustainable materials used instead of quality, durable supplies. Political and institutional gaps also exist, and monitoring mechanisms are insufficient.
