US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has made sharp statements questioning NATO's existence.

In an interview with Fox News, Rubio said that some allies' refusal to grant access to military bases during a conflict with Iran casts doubt on the alliance's usefulness.

"The main reason NATO is useful for the US is the right to access bases. Spain refused us. Then what is the meaning of the alliance? It turns out they are only allies when they want," Rubio emphasized.

The Secretary of State noted that the US pays two-thirds of the costs but allies do not provide support at critical moments.
