US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has unilaterally canceled the deployment of US troops to Poland.

According to Politico, the unexpected move shocked even his own subordinates.

US and European officials are holding phone calls to clarify the decision and check for further surprises.

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki said Warsaw had been negotiating with Washington for months to increase the number of US troops in Poland.

President Donald Trump did not rule out moving some troops from Germany to Poland.

Earlier in May, reports emerged that the US would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany. The Pentagon confirmed the decision, citing a reassessment of the balance of power in Europe.

According to Defense News, the US has canceled the deployment of over 4,000 troops to Poland.
