The US seized the "Skywave" tanker, suspected of carrying Iranian oil, in the Indian Ocean on the night of May 19.
According to Oxu.Az, three US officials informed The Wall Street Journal about the operation.
WSJ sources say the tanker has been under US sanctions since March. Tracking data shows the vessel passed through the Strait of Malacca heading towards Malaysia.
Brokers and Lloyd's List Intelligence data suggest the tanker may have loaded over one million barrels of oil at Iran's Kharg Island in February.
This is at least the third tanker seizure by US authorities targeting the Iranian "shadow fleet." In April, the US seized the "Majestic X" and "Tifani" tankers in the Indian Ocean.
