In India, a 26-year-old woman was declared dead, and her father and brother were arrested for murder, but the woman was alive and went to the police station herself.
According to NDTV, Shivani Kalmekar went missing in Madhya Pradesh in April. In early May, Maharashtra police found a beheaded and partially burned body of an unknown woman near a dam.
Without DNA testing, police concluded the body belonged to Shivani. Subsequently, her father and brother were arrested on suspicion of murder.
On May 28, the woman herself came to the police station and gave a statement, freeing the men from jail. Shivani was alive all along and living with her boyfriend, who works as a laborer.
"I am alive. Everything is fine. My father and brother should be released," the woman said.
Police have been accused of negligence and an internal investigation has been launched.
