A highly unusual event has been recorded in the northern Atlantic Ocean, south of Greenland and Iceland.
While the rest of the ocean is warming, this region is cooling. New research reveals the mystery and warns of a dangerous signal.
Called the 'cold blob' or 'warming hole,' this area has cooled by about 1°C since 1900. Scientists now link it to a weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
If AMOC collapses, it could cause sea level rise on the US East Coast, severe freezing in Europe, and droughts in Africa.
Using satellite and instrument data combined with climate models, researchers found the cooling extends deep into the ocean, not just the surface.
