An Australian court has ordered Fortescue to pay over $108 million in compensation for unauthorized mining on Aboriginal lands.
The Federal Court awarded 150.1 million Australian dollars ($108.4 million) to the Wintawari people, marking the largest compensation ever paid to Indigenous Australians.
However, tribal leaders deem the amount insufficient, considering Fortescue's billions in profits from the area.
The company, owned by Andrew Forrest, had illegally extracted minerals from the lands of the Wintawari people in northern Western Australia.
This historic ruling sets a precedent for indigenous land rights in Australia.
