A deputy from Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party has apologized for comments about Princess Aiko's potential accession to the throne.
Oxu.Az reports citing NTV.ru that Deputy Hirofumi Nakasone called a press conference to express regret after his remarks sparked controversy.
In a lecture, Nakasone stated that Japanese law only allows male-line succession, making Princess Aiko's ascension impossible as no man would marry her. He also warned of pressure to produce a male heir.
Responding to criticism, he said he only wished Princess Aiko a happy life and expressed personal concern.
Emperor Naruhito has three male heirs: his younger brother Crown Prince Fumihito, his nephew Hisahito, and his uncle Prince Hitachi. Proposals to allow female members to retain status and reinstate former princes are under discussion.
