On June 28, Hungary recorded a record temperature, breaking a 90-year-old heat record. In Budapest, the mercury soared to 40°C.
According to HungaroMet, weather observations have been conducted since 1870. The highest temperature was 40°C with no precipitation.
The previous record for June 28 was +39.9°C in Serep in 1935. Prime Minister Peter Madyar warned that early next week temperatures could reach 42°C, surpassing the absolute record.
A third-degree heat warning has been issued, with remote work recommended for state offices. Armed forces and municipalities distribute drinking water, and air-conditioned rooms in town halls are open to the public.
Emergency calls have increased by 8%, with several cases of hyperthermia reported, but no major disasters occurred.
