There is no unified position within US President Donald Trump's administration on future steps regarding Iran.
CNN reports, citing sources, that the disagreement inside the White House intensified after Trump's trip to China. Washington had expected progress on the Iran issue from that visit.
Some administration officials, including Pentagon staff, support a tougher approach toward Iran and consider military strikes possible. Other officials believe it is important for the US to continue negotiations with Iran.
According to sources, Trump is unhappy with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This situation is causing oil and gasoline prices to rise in the US.
"President Trump is considering all options. However, his preferred path is diplomacy," said White House Press Secretary Anna Kelly.
The New York Times, citing sources, reports that the US and Israel have stepped up preparations for possible new strikes against Iran. Trump's team has prepared options for actions in case of escalation, including tougher strikes on Iran's military and infrastructure targets.
