The Supreme Court rejected the cassation appeal of Najmaddin Shahverdiyev, accused of attempted murder.
He was charged with trying to kill his uncle, Arastun Shahverdiyev, out of hooliganism.
According to the investigation, Najmaddin associated his physical disabilities (deaf-mutism and short stature) with the name given to him by his uncle.
In 2023, he approached his uncle from behind near a butcher shop in the Garadagh district of Baku and stabbed him in the back. The knife remained in the body, preventing the completion of the crime.
The victim suffered severe injuries, including internal bleeding and damage to the liver and kidney.
During the trial at the Baku Court of Grave Crimes, the accused was found to have a mental illness. The court ordered compulsory treatment in a specialized psychiatric hospital. The prosecutor's appeal was denied.
