The trial of Saleh Samadov, the former chairman of the Imishli District Elders Council, has begun.
Preparatory session was held at the Baku Court of Serious Crimes under Judge Leyla Asgarova Mammadova. The defendant was informed of his rights and obligations.
Samadov is charged under Article 179.3.2 (large-scale embezzlement) and Article 308.1 (abuse of power) of the Criminal Code, punishable by 5 to 10 years in prison.
Lawyer Jeyhun Mammadov requested house arrest due to his client's age and health, but the court rejected the motion.
The main trial is set for May 20. Last year, Samadov sparked scandal by appearing with a Soviet flag and St. George ribbon at a Victory Day event.
