Taiwan criticized China's expulsion of a New York Times reporter, saying the island will not be silenced. The Presidential Office spokesperson Karen Kuo stated the island will continue working with partners to support democracy and press freedom.
China ordered journalist Vivian Wang to leave the country in February, linking it to the newspaper's interview with President Lai Ching-te. Concerns were also raised over Wang's coverage of censorship, COVID-19, and surveillance.
Kuo called the issue about press freedom and journalist safety. She warned it could damage China's international image and raise concerns about regional stability.
China's Foreign Ministry did not comment. The incident highlights tensions between Beijing and Taipei and challenges for foreign journalists in China.
