South Carolina's Republican-controlled House of Representatives approved a new congressional map early Wednesday aimed at ousting longtime Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn.
The map still needs state Senate approval, where Republicans hold a 34-12 edge. The legislation would postpone primary elections from June 9 to August 18.
This follows pressure from President Trump on GOP Gov. Henry McMaster to redraw the map. Republicans already hold six of seven U.S. House seats.
A Supreme Court decision in April weakened protections for majority-Black and Latino districts. South Carolina is among Southern states rushing to exploit this.
Democrats decry the map as suppressing Black voting power. Rep. John King said: "We're telling young Black kids their voice doesn't matter."
Republicans deny racial motivation. Rep. Luke Rankin: "Trump won decisively three times. A 7-0 Republican delegation is reasonable."
Clyburn, 85, has represented the 6th District since 1993.
